So, it's the day after my 24h readathon and I almost finished my reread of the ACOTAR series by Sarah J. Maas so you better be ready for a lot of ACOTAR photos on my feed 😁. I read ACOTAR and ACOMAF before the readathon and started and finished ACOWAR during the readathon 🙌. I had planned to read ACOFAS as well but the time ran out. But I started it right away afterwards and so far I like it. I know that people say that not a lot of things are gonna happen in this book but I don't mind a lottle slice of life 😊. .
Also, how pretty is this citrus and basil scented candle from @abookishflickering ❤. It came with the ACOFAS box and smells so good 😍.
Catwoman Soulstealer – S.J.M⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
‘Catwoman Soulstealer’ is hands down my favourite novel I have read this year thus far. Maas has proven herself to be a diverse author, tackling this modern story in comparison to her usual genre of fantasy. She took to it, in my eyes, like a duck to water. I would love for her to branch out more into this genre as well as her own worlds of fantasy as she quite clearly is capable.
The sheer amount of varying representation in this novel was stunning. The presentation of LGBT characters was, to me, a perfect addition to this novel. There was no fuss or awkwardness in the reveal and the relationship was treated in the same way a heterosexual relationship of the same nature would be. There is a time and place for great focus on these things, but in ‘CSS’, the acceptance and normality were all I could have asked for.
The exploration of mental health through Harley and Luke was wonderfully weaved into the book without drawing away from our main character Selina. Although, I wish we had more time to explore these two, that is best left to novels which can follow their own personal developments rather than piling them all into a novel about Catwoman, already rich with varying developments of her own.
The character of Selina shows the scars that a life in first world poverty can leave on a young girl forced to grow up too quickly. Filling the shoes of an absent mother, she takes on more and more risky decisions to protect and care for Maggie, her younger sister. This eye opening glimpse into the life which is very real for some people is accompanied by the heart shattering terminal illness which has a hold of Maggie. As the pair separate the developments in Selina are expected, however, as the plot unfolds you see how her motivations are not what you first expect, deeply enrichening her character even further.
Maas never ceases to amaze, as her characters are often in possession of more knowledge than the reader. ‘CSS’ was no exception to this, as Selina springs out numerous surprises throughout the book.
A truly heart wrenching book with a thrilling conclusion, I only wish Maas would give us more. #catwomansoulstealer#review

I’ve gone a little “old school readingsumpton” with my new theme! It’s a style I always loved and enjoyed the most! It’s also something I can do while still watching my kiddo! Hope you guys enjoy the “new” theme! 😘
Book Review: Catwoman Soulstealer by Sarah J Maas (DC Icon Series) 🌟🌟.5 *****
☺ Well written
☺ Sound plot
☺ Good characterisation
☺ Fast paced ☹ This wasn't comic Gotham
☹ Not dark (SJM can do dark)
☹ Lacking psychological aspect ☹ Canon completely ignored
☹ No Batman
☹ Harley's depiction ☹ Diversity written very heavy handed *****
I like SJM's writing and if you read this as a non Gotham story, then it's a fun read. The writing is solid as is the plot. I can tolerate some changing around of the canon but this threw everything out and rewrote key aspects. If you're not a comic book fan, then it won't bother you but I am and it very much did.
It didn't feel remotely like the dark, gritty Gotham I love and the events could have been taking place anywhere. A huge part of why I have always loved the world of Batman is the psychological element that is a key foundation of the world and story. This was entirely missing and no more so than with my beloved Harley Quinn.
Poor Harley! It doesn't remotely fit in with the canon that Harley is even in this story (I know I'm talking about the canon a lot but try and imagine HP rewritten with James Potter attending Hogwarts with Harry et al. There's suspending disbelief and there's unbelievable). Harley is extremely intelligent, has a PhD, is a psychiatrist and is the gymnast. She is a really dark, disturbed character and whilst SJM touched on this, her Harley was a watered down version of a very complex character.
Where was Batman? I think it was probably a publisher choice not to have him in the story. Catwoman and Batman have always had an odd romantic entanglement. To put Catwoman with Batwing wasn't a simple swap of male leads; it was a big change in a history that impacts both Batman and Catwoman's character development. It's lazy to ignore the canon to this extent.
So much was wrong with this novel in terms of representing the DC world that for me, it's not a Gotham story but a light hearted, bubblegum, girl group jaunt that has little connection to the wonderfully dark, psychological nightmare world of Batman. Buy the incredible Arkham Asylum graphic novel by Grant Morris and Dave McKean instead 🦇
